You are not “just”…

💡 - Lightbulb moment…

That was the first ‘telling off’ that I actually learnt a lesson from.

I was in my late teens, working for a small manufacturing company that, as you can well imagine, was full of loud, full of life men. From ages similar to mine, all the way to way past retirement, there was about every character type you could think of. Especially when you look at the wider group of customers, suppliers and engineers.

Fair to say, that it could be a daunting environment, even more so for a timid 18 year old.

As ‘the admin girl’, it was standard practice for me to take the calls, quotes, orders, filing and general ad hoc tasks. During meetings, I was the one to work reception, welcoming guests, showing them to the board room and supplying the coffee. All pretty normal.

That was until one meeting where I welcomed a regular customer into the building, but one who I hadn’t met face to face. I introduced myself, and he asked for my job title, “oh, I’m just the admin girl” I stated.

There followed, the kindest, most respectful “telling off” I have received. This old gent reminded me that there is absolutely no just about it. He firmly told me that those who work in administration ( or PA/VA assistance) are the backbone of any company.

After he listed all of the ways that we support businesses, he shook my hand, and informed my manager of what a great job I am doing.

That day changed a lot of things for me, not just how I viewed myself, but the progression of my own career.
